So, what to do when the appetite for travel is large and the budget is prohibitively small? And, after all, you can’t be on vacation all of the time, right?
My solution: become a webcam traveller.
Long before I ever laid eyes on the Eiffel Tower in person, I gazed at it lovingly every day on my iGoogle home page Eiffel Tower Live webcam widget. Seeing it shrouded in fog, sparking with lights, obscured by rain and gleaming in the sunlight made me feel closer to it somehow. And not like the freaky lady who married it.
So, how stoked was I to discover an iPhone app that puts a world of webcams right in your pocket! There are various webcam apps, but the one I’m currently using is called Live Cams. It connects you with over 2,500 live webcams. Some of the cams can even be controlled by you remotely so you can take a proper look around the place.
Every night in bed, right before I go to sleep, I check in on all of my cams and see what’s happening around the world. Last night, I even had a dream about the Japanese bicycle garage where someone ran in and stole a bike and all of the men in yellow jackets started running all around.
Give it a try… find a webcam in a place you’ve always wanted to go… or even somewhere that you have already visited… and treat yourself to a mini-vacation!
I’ve favorited about 60 cameras, including:
Animals
Killer whales in San Diego, a bunny in Tokyo, Flossy the pig in the UK, a sheep farm in the Netherlands, doggy daycare in Texas, a henhouse in Massachussets, Penguins in Sydney, a watering hole in South Africa, a dairy farm in Finland, a white stork in France, a feeding station for exotic animals in Tokyo and a beehive in Slovakia
Roads & Bridges
Route 66 gas station in Colorado, a bridge in Halton UK, a busy road in Bologna, the Brooklyn Bridge and a really crazy curvy road in Slovenia
Wonders
Eiffel Tower, pyramids in Egypt, Disneyland, and the Roman Colosseum, New York City street view
Curiously Interesting
Some sort of a bike garage in Tokyo, a view out a Hong Kong apartment window, a parking lot in Alaska, a offshore helipad in Germany, an assembly line in Louisiana, the airport in Jackson Hole
Eye Candy
Tuscan vineyard, coastline at Positano, bridges in Montebelluna, a little church in Milan, beaches in Hawaii, snow and trees in Lake Tahoe
